Common Causes of Knee Pain
PATELLO-FEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME
Also known as Runner's knee. Often caused by poor tracking of the kneecap, this condition results in pain at the front of the knee, especially during activities like squatting, climbing stairs, or prolonged sitting.
LIGAMENT SPRAINS
Injuries to the ligaments that stabilise the knee (eg. ACL, MCL) can occur with sudden twisting movements or trauma. These injuries may cause swelling, instability, and restricted movement.
MENISCUS INJURY
The menisci are cartilage pads that act as shock absorbers in the knee. Tears can result from trauma or degeneration, leading to locking, clicking, or pain with weight-bearing.
TENDINOPATHY
Overuse of the quadriceps or patellar tendon — especially in activities involving jumping or rapid direction changes — can lead to inflammation and pain just below the kneecap.
OSTEOARTHRITIS
Arthritis in the knee causes joint degeneration over time, resulting in stiffness, swelling, pain, and reduced mobility — particularly in the morning or after activity.
REFERRED PAIN FROM HIP/LOW BACK
Sometimes knee pain doesn’t originate in the knee at all. Hip or spinal issues may cause altered movement or nerve referral, contributing to knee discomfort.
